The LSU basketball player Angel Reese, who last year led her team to the NCAA women’s national championship, claimed that the year she lived drama-free was the one after winning the title, which resulted in hate speech and death threats directed at her.
After Monday night’s 97-84 Elite Eight loss to Iowa, Reese spoke candidly about her struggles.
At the news conference following the game, she said to the reporters, “I’ve been through so much.” “I’ve witnessed a lot. I’ve received numerous threats and attacks. Someone has sexualized me. Someone has threatened me. I’ve been a lot of things, and each time, I’ve persevered.
Reese’s problems started when, during the last moments of LSU’s championship game triumph over Iowa the previous year, she went up to Iowa star Caitlin Clark and put an open hand across her face, a gesture made famous by WWE star John Cena and meant to convey the message “You can’t see me.” Then, Reese made a gesture indicating she would receive a championship ring by pointing to her ring finger.
Earlier in the competition, Clark had gestured in a similar way to another opponent.
Reese stated, “Since I won the national championship, all of this has happened.” And even if it stinks, I wouldn’t alter a thing. I would continue to sit here and declare that I am who I am without apology. I’m going to stay true to who I am and leave that mark forever.
After the game, Flau’jae Johnson, a teammate from LSU, stated that Reese’s drama wasn’t necessary.
Johnson remarked, “You guys don’t know Angel Reese, so everybody can have their opinion on her.” “I know the real Angel Reese, and the person I encounter on a daily basis is a strong, kind, and compassionate individual. However, she is wearing a huge crown.
