The relationship between Josh Allen and Stefon Diggs, the wide receiver who was traded the day before, has been the subject of much discussion. On Fox, the receiver essentially asked whether Allen could succeed without him.
When Allen addressed the Diggs trade in public for the first time on Thursday, he decided to play it cool, if there was ever any animosity between the two. Throughout their four years together, he made a point of praising Diggs and the effect the new weapon for the Houston Texans had on his career. After Diggs was traded, according to Allen, the two texted one another.
Regarding the text, Allen stated, “Just thanking him for everything that he did for me.” “I’ll always have a spot in my heart for him and I’ll always love him like a brother and wish him nothing but the best.”
Naturally, Allen was disappointed that Buffalo had decided to let go of the player who, in his own words, “helped me become the quarterback that I am today.”
“It’s definitely hard to part ways with a guy that’s been very instrumental in our success here over the last four years,” Allen stated. “Obviously, I hope that everyone can stay with us.
“You know, we’ve changed a lot this offseason and lost a lot of experienced leadership, with Stef among them. That must be the nature of the industry. And as we approach Year 7, that’s just the way things are. I’m not compensated for making adjustments to the team. I’m paid to try to lead the men on this team and be the greatest quarterback I can be.”
Without Diggs, who will now team up in Houston with the current Offensive Rookie of the Year, C.J. Stroud, Allen will attempt to maintain his success. Bills general manager Brandon Beane isn’t panicking despite losing Diggs. Beane actually stated this week that the Bills don’t need to go out and sign a new wideout to take the No. 1 spot.
“What you need are guys in this offence that are smart, versatile, selfless and can make the plays that their skill set allows them to make,” Beane told 13WHAM. “If there’s one that pops out either in free agency or the draft that makes sense for us or a really good No. 2, you know, we’ll do it, but I don’t think not having a No. 1 doesn’t mean we can’t have success on offence or as a team.”
Even if Allen and Diggs are parting ways, it’s acceptable to acknowledge the enormous amount of success they shared as teammates. The only quarterback/wide receiver combination in the NFL better than Allen and Diggs was ranked by CBS Sports’ Nate Burleson in October of last year: Miami’s Tua Tagovailoa and Tyreek Hill.
The two will be remembered as the second-greatest QB/WR combination in Bills history, only behind Hall of Famers Jim Kelly and Andre Reed. They helped lead Buffalo to four consecutive AFC East division titles.
