With a six-run third inning, Wilmer Flores smacked a grand slam to help the San Francisco Giants stop their six-game losing streak Wednesday, defeating the Arizona Diamondbacks 9-3.
A two-run home drive by Heliot Ramos off of struggling pitcher Jordan Montgomery in the third inning also helped. Ramos had a solid batting effort, reaching base six times on two hits and four walks.
Ramos’s ability to work deep counts during his at-bats and his balanced approach at the plate were also commended by Giants manager Bob Melvin.
With just two and a half innings pitched and seven hits, Montgomery gave up six earned runs in a rough outing. He acknowledged that the third inning was when the game went south for him and voiced unhappiness with his performance.
Despite the team’s substantial advantage, Giants starter Jordan Hicks encountered trouble as well and was removed from the game in the fourth inning. Sean Hjelle came in for him and pitched 1 1/3 innings while picking up the win.
After three hours and thirty minutes of play, both teams struggled with walks and wasted opportunities, leaving a total of twenty-eight men on base.
