The Buccaneers are striving to retain the majority of their crucial free agents in Tampa Bay, yet Devin White, the former No. 5 overall pick, stands apart from those efforts.

At 26 years old, White found himself displaced from his starting position by K.J. Britt towards the latter part of the previous season.

Despite his Pro Bowl status, the Buccaneers have displayed minimal interest in pursuing a contract extension with him.

General manager Jason Licht, speaking at the combine, acknowledged ongoing deliberations regarding other players but offered little insight into White’s future.

The linebacker’s relationship with the team soured over the past two seasons, reaching a climax when he refused to accept a backup role after being benched in favor of Britt during a game against Green Bay.

White’s refusal to play minutes before kickoff, citing a foot injury, marked a turning point.

Despite his subsequent alternating role with Britt, it appears the Buccaneers are poised to transition his responsibilities to the younger linebacker.

Last offseason, White had pushed for a new contract, which the Buccaneers declined, opting instead for the fifth-year club option.

His demands for a lucrative deal remained unmet, further straining his relationship with the team.

Licht refrained from delving into White’s performance decline but hinted at readiness to move forward without him.

With promising prospects like Britt and SirVocea Dennis waiting in the wings, the Buccaneers express enthusiasm for their youthful linebacker cohort.

Defensive coordinator Todd Bowles maintains communication with White but acknowledges the team’s financial constraints amid a roster of impending free agents.

While expressing admiration for White’s abilities, Bowles emphasizes the reality of financial limitations in retaining all players.

As the Buccaneers navigate the complexities of free agency, the futures of key players like White remain uncertain, highlighting the intricate balance between talent, financial considerations, and team dynamics.
