With Russell Wilson’s dismissal creating confusion for the team’s preseason strategy, the Denver Broncos are still selecting free agents for the 2024 campaign. Malcolm Roach, a former defensive lineman for the New Orleans Saints, has officially signed a two-year, $8 million contract with the organization as of this Tuesday, March 12.

Report: Saints offered Malcolm Roach 2-year deal, DT tests the market

In the process of assembling a new defense, the Denver Broncos sign Malcolm Roach to a two-year, $8 million contract.

Malcolm Roach, a defensive lineman for the New Orleans Saints, will rejoin his former head coach, Sean Payton. The Denver Broncos are implementing a new defensive strategy by adding a 6’3′′, 290-pound defensive interior to make up for their weak defense from the previous 2023 season.

It is crucial to remember that Malcolm Roach, one of the top interior defensive lineman in the NFL, played 23 of 139 run-defense snaps during the most recent 2023 season with the New Orleans Saints. Roach completed 90 tackles, 7 tackles for a loss, 7 quarterback hits, 1 sack, 1 pass deflection, and 1 interception in his four seasons with the New Orleans Saints.

Sheldon Rankins is a defensive tackle who was previously selected by head coach Sean Payton with the first overall pick in the 2016 draft while Payton was the head coach of the New Orleans Saints. It is also true that Rankins would not cost a lot of money to sign given the strict salary cap restrictions that the Denver Broncos are subject to.

He recorded six sacks, nine tackles for loss, and ten quarterback hits in 15 games during his 2023 season with the Texans. This and his past interactions with Sean Payton may be important considerations for the Denver Broncos when they select their next free agent.

Following a four-year contract with the Cincinnati Bengals in 2020, D.J. Reader is currently a free agent, and the Denver Broncos had previously expressed interest in signing him. With D.J. Reader’s 6’3′′, 330-pound frame and his ability to be a bigger player, he may easily replace D.J. Jones in the team’s starting lineup for the 2024 Denver Broncos NFL season.
