Prior to their highly anticipated rematch of their teams in the NCAA Tournament Elite Eight on Monday night, college basketball stars Caitlin Clark of Iowa and Angel Reese of LSU stated that there is only extremely fierce competitiveness between them rather than personal enmity. “It seems like people view us as adversaries,” Reese stated on Sunday in Albany, New York. “Caitlin Clark and I are not at odds with one another. I want everyone to be aware of that. It’s simply an extremely competitive game. There are no friends once I cross those lines. I’m going to speak negatively to you. We may get wild after the game, but I’ll do whatever it takes to stay in your brain the entire time.
People may not truly be aware of that. A rematch of the 2023 national title game, which the Tigers won 102-85, is scheduled after wins on Saturday by top-seeded Iowa (32-4), defending champion LSU (31-5), and the third seed in the Albany 2 region. In addition to her double-double of 15 points and 10 rebounds in that game, Reese had ended the game by pointing her finger at Clark and imitating professional wrestler John Cena’s “You can’t see me” hand motion. Due to their supposed rivalry and closeness, Reese and Clark—who had made the similar gesture at opponents in previous games—became major topics in the national conversation.
“There’s definitely that competitive fire,” stated Clark, who has an incredible career scoring record of 3,859 points. “Winning is what we both desire above all else, and that’s how it should be for competitors in situations like this, whether it’s the Elite Eight or the national championship.
